Auto Magic« Turns 50!

The Beginning

Auto Wax Company, Inc. (AWC) was founded in August 1960 by Paul D. Miller and a partner named Jolley Byrd. They distributed reconditioning chemicals, which Paul had been making in his garage since the mid 50’s, to customers throughout Texas. Paul’s Auto Magic, a carpet cleaner, was their first product.

The success generated by this entrepreneurial sales force of two in the Dallas market enabled them to begin targeting markets outside of their home base. Beginning in 1966, distributors throughout Texas, Oklahoma and five adjoining states began selling the now trademarked line of Auto Magic® reconditioning products to professional clientele.

Father and Son

In 1975 Paul’s son, David Miller, joined the company after graduating from Southern Methodist University. Like his father, David brought both entrepreneurial skills and an acute business sense with him, which enabled him to direct and lead the company’s rapid sales growth during the 1970’s and early 80’s.

David developed a national sales force and made a commitment to quality by installing Auto Wax Company’s first chemical lab. By 1990, Auto Wax had evolved into an international competitor with distribution throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.


More AWC Expansions

In 1994, AWC expanded its marketing efforts with the introduction of a line of products formulated for the body shop environment, Body Magic®. Also that year, AWC launched its retail program with Clay Magic®. Truly an innovator, Clay Magic® has revolutionized the reconditioning world with it's vehicle preparation clay bar.

In 2006 AWC was acquired by Illinois Tool Works Inc. (ITW) and is part of ITW's Finishing Group. Illinois Tool Works Inc. Quality Reconditioning Products

AWC manufactures and distributes over 100 signature reconditioning products under the Auto Magic® trademark. AWC products are recommended for their high level of consistent quality, user friendliness, and environmentally safe formulations. Automotive manufacturers such as Ford, Toyota and Isuzu have embraced AWC’s reconditioning standards into their own certified used vehicle programs. To ensure our products are keeping up with the changes in the industry, we continually visit with our consumers to identify new products and techniques to solve new-world problems. AWC accepts the challenge to continue to develop innovative products and solutions to serve the ever-changing automotive aftermarket. As vehicle paints, fabrics, plastics, and other surfaces evolve, so do our products. With 9 active patents and 2 patents pending, AWC will continue to drive growth through innovative products and strategic marketing.

Worldwide Distribution

Nearly 250 worldwide distributors sell Auto Magic® products to reconditioning professionals in dealerships, car washes, detail shops, auctions, retailers, and car enthusiasts. Consumers from around the world have demanded the quality and expertise that comes with Auto Magic® products and distributors. Over the past 20 years we have expanded our reach to places as close as South America and as far as Asia Pacific. Many of Auto Magic’s distributors have been selling and using the products as long as we’ve been making them. This added product knowledge and experience makes them qualified technicians; not just sales people. Their main goal is to educate users and provide innovative solutions for every day problems. Without the devotion and loyalty of our distributors, we could not have experienced the growth and popularity we have seen over the past 50 years.

Training Excellence

AWC maintains a staff of reconditioning experts who travel the world conducting customized end-user seminars for dealer groups, auctions, distributors, and automotive manufacturers.

The Auto Magic® “6 Stages of Reconditioning’, developed by ITW/Auto Wax, continues to educate professional detailer’s around the globe. The 6 Stages of Reconditioning is the “backbone” for OEM’s such as Ford, Toyota, and Isuzu. The intent was to build a training program that would increase professionalism in the reconditioning industry, while providing a source of information that is reliable and proven in the industry.
